For a lot of kids growing up in the urban environment, the playground is the closest thing going to a ballpark. Yes, it lacked that cut grass smell, and perhaps sliding was a bit tougher on blacktop than dirt, but hey, at least here was a place where you could play a ball game on a full diamond shaped field.
