Snow is a seasonal transformation of the city's surfaces. Slopes that make ballgames difficult are ideal for sledding. Ponds used for fishing become skating rinks. Snow imparts a timeless quality to the urban landscape, softens its jagged edges. Traffic slows. Streetlights render the snow-coated trees iridescent. The urban landscape comes to resemble the streets of a small town.
