George Burns recalls playing in the street
When we played baseball we used a broom handle and a rubber ball. A manhole
cover was home plate, a fire hydrant was first base, second base was a
lamppost, and Mr. Gitletz who used to bring a kitchen chair down to watch us
play was third base. One time I slid into Mr. Gitletz. He caught the ball
and tagged me out.
Bill Cosby remembers football
We played football right there in the street. And here is where we had the
greatest quarterback in the world. Our quarterback had to control twenty
three men on each side, and he was really great at it. He'd always get down
on one knee and draw things. He'd take a Coke bottletop...
Now, Shorty, this is you - this is a Coke bottlecap
I don't want to be a Coke bottlecap.
What do you want to be?
A piece of glass.
Now listen to this now, Arnie, go down ten steps and cut left behind the
black Chevy. Filbert, you run down to my house and wait in the living room.
Cosby, you go down to 3rd Street, catch the J bus, have them open the
door at 19th Street - I'll fake to you.
There was always one fat kid you never thought of...
What about me?
You go long.
We had good plays back then.
