The Wycliffe Stickball League
Well, maybe it wasn't quite that dramatic, but on October 14th the Wycliffe Stiffs Stickball League officially began, with four teams, 75 players, and a 21 game season. Their mission is to "Keep Stickball A Tradition Not Just A Game." The four teams include the Flatbush Egg Creams, The Coney Island Bull Dogs, The Wycliffe Yankees, and The Concourse City Stickers. The game is slow pitch, where the ball is pitched in on a bounce to the hitter who then swings and runs it out (see more about different types of stickball). The league operates out of Wellington Florida (located between West Palm and Boca Raton on the East Coast). All players are 55 plus and until last winter none had played Stickball for 35-40 years. According to commissioner Marty Ross "It's been tremendous experience and everyone is excited to be doing this again. Even though the guys hadn't played in years, we got right back into it. Swinging the bat, fielding the ball and of course arguing the calls." Marty makes it clear that the folks are on a mission to have people reconnect and enjoy this great game. He said "Our home field is located at the Wellington Village Park,11700, Pierson Road, Wellington, Florida, 33467. Games are at 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM on Tuesdays. If anybody is in our area, we love to have them come visit our games and swap some stories." Marty can be contacted at wycliffestiffs@aol.com |
