Steve accepts a trophy at the 2001 New York Stickball Classic with his son, Skylar.
Steve Mercado was a New York fireman, an avid stickball player, and the president of the New York Emperors Stickball League. On Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, Steve entered a stricken World Trade Center tower, as did his company of 10 others. The tower collapsed during this heroic ministration. Sadly, Steve was among the thousands who were lost in the tragedy.

We've dedicated this section of Streetplay in tribute to Steve. We hope it conveys some of the truly inspiring qualities of this wonderful man and the strong feelings that many of us have for him. Please use the navigation bar at the bottom of each page to find your way about this section.

The New York Times memorialized Steve as part of its "September 11: Portraits of Grief" series; please visit it in addition to what you read here. We also encourage you to share your stories and memories of Steve on our Facebook page.
