YMCA hosts final handball event of year

On Dec 30, the 2001 YMCA One-Wall Doubles Championship was held at the Flatbush YMCA located at 1401 Flatbush Ave. Brooklyn NY. Back in the late seventies the Brooklyn YMCA served as a playing site for many one-wall handball tournaments and is being considered as a possible indoor back-up location for the USHA One-Wall Nationals.

The finals were between Joe Kaplan/Cesar Sala and Tony Roberts/Peewee Castro. The final started evenly, until Joe and Cesar's killer shots and overall play proved to much as they rolled 25-14. The finalists received cash prizes.

PRELIMINARY ROUND

Ron Pescatore/Felix Zilberbrand d. Sal Catuadella/Joe Kessler 25-24,

Jonathan Lee/Alvaro Rebazza d. Sal Coticelli/Kareem Wilkerson 25-13,

Stu Kirzner/Al Weinstein d. Frank Rivera/Dwayne Sampson 25-9.

QUARTERFINALS

Joe Kaplan/Cesar Sala d. Pescatore/Zilberbrand 25-19,

Ervin Irizarry/Robert Sostre d. Pete Pelligrini/Gabe Vazquez 25-13,
